Wavy.

by Jamila Pierre

When I laid my eyes upon this blazer at the Burlington Coat Factory on 6th ave. & 23rd street, I flipped! It's just so unique yet practical, I just knew it was something that needed to be in my life...something I would get many days of use out of.

If you've been with me for the long haul, you know about my affinity for work-wear, I am obsessed. I guess it's the old woman that has lived in me for some time now, but I just always seem to gravitate towards the corporate aesthetic.

The thing is...this style of clothing can be beyond drab and the objective for me is to find ways to spice things up and still be work-ready, so when I find unique work-wear pieces I pounce.

I went monochromatic, "On Wednesday We Wear Black", with this look. In keeping everything black, on black, on black, and in order to add interest to the outfit I decided to play with textures. I paired a plain black button-down with a pair of half & half faux leather leggings, threw on this most awesome textured blazer with it's amazing white waves, my glitter heels from ZARA, and this unique necklace with one big pearl smack dab in the middle....and voila, corporate Thai Chi Realness.

On the day I purchased this blazer I had a boat load of things in my shopping cart (I don't know if you do this too but I just throw everything in my cart and curb the amount I plan to purchase as I make my way to the counter), and by the time I reached the register I had curbed everything down so much so, the blazer was practically free. Every time I go out shopping I budget myself, if I don't come anywhere near my intended price limit, I consider that to not only be a win...but in some twisted way it makes the items purchased even cheaper....maybe i'm crazy....but yea.

Then I had all these other things I needed to get, food to buy, etc... and it turned out that none of the monies allotted for that was even spent.... by the end of the day this blazer was as good as free in my eyes.

  1. Necklace from Rainbow. $7
  2. Bracelets from Fashion to Figure. $12
  3. Blazer from Burlington coat Factory. $ (As good as free)
  4. Button-down from JCP. $17

Afropunk Fest 2014.

by Jamila Pierre

I recently did a photo shoot with (as a model) with photographer Rochelle Brock of Foreverfatleopard.com, for AFROPUNK FEST 2014. It was strange for me to be in front of the camera in that capacity but the experience was fun overall.

A few weeks later, B. Hawk Snipe of Pinnedxstitched.com, invited me to the AfroPunk Festival to see my images hung up in a mini gallery, of course I was excited to go, and of course I invited my fellow creative and friend, Angelica Vanessa.  Bellow are images of what we wore, and what we saw.

I decided that I wanted to go with a denim on denim look and paired it with taupe boots and a taupe flowy vest, I also wore brassy jewels and a taupe bag with gold details to anchor the look. I wanted to be the triple C's (Comfy, Casual, Cute), as I was going to be walking around quite a bit.

What I wore:

  1. 3 Necklaces: Forever21, Wholesale district, Streetfair. $5-$10
  2. Vest from H&M. $10
  3. Denim Top from Avenue.com. $30 ( was $54, marked to $37, then coupon'ed to $30)
  4. Jeans from V.I.M. $12
  5. Boots from the late great Dots.com. $20

And here's the one and only Angelica Vanessa, rockin' a phenomenal color palette.

What She Wore:

  1. Necklaces from Street fairs. $3-$7
  2. Kimono from Marshalls. $19.99
  3. Top from Marshalls. $12
  4. Jeans from V.I.M. $13
  5. Boots from Macys. $50

Some of the lovely folks I deemed to have amazing style, they actually stood out in a crowd of people doing their best to do the same.

And of course the jewels were amazing, I would wear pretty much everything. I will do a more in-depth post on Manikmag.com about theses bad boys right here.

And last but not least, I came upon artists (Mighty_Math)  and Stephanie Anderson with some amazing work showcased, to which i'll be in contact with to feature on the blog soon enough.

By the end of the day I was exhausted, but all in all I had fun with mi amigo, and was delighted by all the eye candy (People, Jewels, and Art).
