CITRINE

by Jamila Pierre

There is indeed a crisp in the air and the aesthetics of fall are already in heavy rotation, but that doesn’t mean you have to be tied down to that aesthetic at all times. When I think about all of the ridiculous rules in fashion and how everyone is so hell bent on being trendy….it’s triggering. Who the hell came up with these bogus parameters, and why do people follow them? Nothing under the sun is original but you can be authentic and you can put a creative spin on everything and anything. There’s so much a person can do and people actively block themselves, actively put restriction on their creative expression. why?

In any event…we’re in the last week of October and I’m wearing a bright citrus-slice-printed dress and loving every minute of it. In accordance to the “rules” I’d be stepping right out of a spring/summer catalogue with this print and style of dress. But for me, I don’t give a flying rat’s ass about all of that. Now listen, if you want to solely dedicate yourself to trends simply because their trendy, that’s on you, but I just can’t do it.

I’m also a big repeat offender. I wear my clothing over and over. Most times I find new ways to rock something but there are indeed times when I really don’t care and I’ll just don the same EXACT look again, the very next day even. Who gon check me, boo?

So when CowCow let me choose a few pieces that resonated with my spirit, I was stopped dead in my tracks by not only the print of this wonderful dress, but the got dang POCKETS. Every girls dream. Especially if you like to be handsfree from time to time. Plus I choose pieces that can be worn relentlessly. This dress and it’s shape, print, and material lends to just that.

And even though this dress looks like it would be perfect for the warmer months, and trust me it is, I felt drawn to pull it out for Autumn/ Winter.

I think it’s safe to say we all know where this is going. Out comes the turtlenecks, sweaters, long-sleeves, etc.… Anything to instantly warm things up in the practical sense. And like clockwork I dug out one of my favorites; a “burnout”-styled burgundy lightweight sweater. And what better to pair it with than a nice tall pair of burgundy color-saturated leatherette boots. I added a subdued necklace because for once that wasn’t one of the focal points, and of course I had to add a little ZAZA ZOO to the mix (however minuet), by adding a earth toned multi-colored braided belt.

I added this belt because I’m always trying to find a way to mix it up even in subtle ways. The belt almost acts as a print and because of that I’d like to think I’m technically mixing prints up in here, up in here. I made the not so difficult choice to pair this dress with a wine-colored backdrop as opposed to a plain old black one. I guess you could just throw on a black long-sleeve and black boot and be done with it…but why? Live a little.

How about this, we make a promise right here and now to each other that we will actively choose fun and creativity with everything we do from here on out? I know for some it may not be so easy (maybe you feel you don’t have the means or time even), but you can still make baby steps towards living life in 3D and in color, every chance you get. Just try it.
