I want to share with you guys my love of music. My focus will be on songs that I've been vibing to the most each week. Guys, there are so many songs I want to share with you! Now, some you may not like, some you may love, some you may remember, and some may be new to you and heading to your music device stat...either way, this is a peek into my music world and my taste. Respect it, enjoy it, and I hope I either introduce you to something or bring back fond memories.
Disclaimer: These are not my songs and I am not claiming them.
LET'S GET STARTED!!!
#1 Yelle- A Cause Des Garcons: This song just reminds me of the time I worked at 99X on the lower east side and still lived in my tiny studio apartment in Bushwick (those were the days). I really miss that place, and those slightly balmy summer afternoons, fans in the windows, with this song (and many like it) just blaring throughout my tiny living space.
#2 Gorilla Zoe ft. Santogold & M.I.A- Get It Up: I honestly couldn't pinpoint the exact moment I came across this song right here, but I was definitely working in L.I.C at the time, it was a 7 train must-have, and it already featured two of my faves (Santogold & M.I.A). I can't say I've found a song from Gorilla Zoe that makes me feel it in my bones quite like this one, but then again I haven't done my due diligence.
#3 The Diplomats- Dipset anthem ft. Camron & Juelz Santana: Oh SNAP! But who doesn't remember this? This was on literal repeat in the back back days, so much nostalgia! This week I have kinda went with some "throw-backie" type sounds (you'll see as you progress...there is a theme here), I've just been in a bit of a mood this week and I'm sure it'll reflect.
#4 Talib Kweli & Hi Tek- The Blast: Yes I love his other songs, but this is the song that made me fall for his talent, it has everything anyone could ask for in a song. The video is pretty good too.
#5 Lilly Allen- Smile: I think it's safe to say we can all relate to this song in some shape or form, we've all been here. I fell in love with Lilly's voice and music, in just about 2006 (when this song can out), and the the video gave me much satisfaction as well.
#6 Lesley Gore- You Don't Own Me: Given my history with music I should have heard this song elsewhere....but I the first time I heard it was in the movie, " The First Wives Club". As much as I love the original, I can't help but love, Diane Keaton, Goldie Hawn, & Bette Midler's rendition of the classic. This song is a serious "women's anthem".
#7 Oasis- Wonderwall: I told you I was in a nostalgia type of mood this week, right...? My playlist has had way more than just ten songs on it, but an ongoing theme has definitely been one that sparks memories and emotions of a carefree time in my life (or emotions that need sorting). If this song doesn't bring at least a little smirk to your face then I don't know what to tell you.
#8 Smith- Baby It's You: Ok, so here we have another case of an absolutely phenomenal song in it's original form (a classic), but the rendition performed by Mary Elizabeth Winstead in the movie " Death Proof", directed by Quentin Tarantino (a capella)....it just made me have a new appreciation for the song. It may not seem like much to some, but it's the little things that can make or break something for me. It was a fresh take on an oldie but a goodie (not to mention, the movie was pretty BOSS AF).
#9 The Coasters- Down In Mexico: This song, just like #8 on the list, was on the soundtrack to the movie "Death Proof". how amazing this ISH right here was going to be....I. Had. No. F'ing. Idea! Just listen to it and tell me your life hasn't been changed. If it hasn't....again...I can't help you.
Last but not least, #10 Samuel L. Jackson- Stack-o-lee: I've cleaned my house....what seems like 100x this week (sick and all), and the only thing that made it bearable was my music and that this song inevitably came on and was repeated a couple of time throughout my cleaning session. I swear I have little dirt demons that come in the middle of the night and make messes for me to clean in the morning (or maybe I'm just a crazy person...yea...maybe that's it).
There you have it, my top ten for this week!
Thank you for braving through that with me. Remember every Saturday I will bring you a new list of my top 10 songs of the week, in the NCS Stereo (NaughtCouture's Saturday Stereo) segment. Most times there's a focus on artists; here I will be focusing predominately on specific songs, how they make me feel, what I like about the particular song, how I discovered them, and/or sometimes the memories that come attached to them.
